Volunteer for the ‘From Mirpur to Birmingham’ Oral History Project

The Library of Birmingham in partnership with the ‘From Mirpur to Birmingham’ Project is looking for volunteers to assist with an Oral History project.

This project is seeking to create an archive of the experiences of immigrants moving to Birmingham from South Asia with a focus on Mirpur (Azad Kashmir/ Pakistan) for deposit into the Library of Birmingham archive. This opportunity will primarily involve you interviewing the participants and recording their stories as well as the creation of photography and some film work. All questions will be provided for you however you may need to use some initiative at times.

We are therefore looking for volunteers who are interested in learning about family journeys and who have a passion for heritage and cultural experiences. You will need to have excellent oral and written communication skills as you will be required to record and articulate what participants say. You will also need to be confident with IT, as well as having a friendly and sociable manner and have proven experience of working within the public domain. The ability to speak a second language including Urdu or Mirpuri/ Pothwari would be desirable but not essential. Finally you would need to be flexible in your time commitment until the end of May to accommodate the participants wanting to take part.

This role will require travel across Birmingham and also from time to time you will be required to be located at the project office in Bordesley Green and the Library of Birmingham. All reasonable travel expenses will be reimbursed.

Full training will be provided which will include the collection and editing of oral history stories and some web based work including uploading edits and social media and marketing.

If you are interested and feel you have the necessary skills and experience please apply by downloading and completing the attached application form and return by post to:

Library of Birmingham Centenary Square Broad Street Birmingham B1 2ND

Or email your completed form to teresa.mulrennan@birmingham.gov.uk by March 28th 2014.

If you are successful you will be invited to a short informal interview to discuss your application in a little more detail and give you the opportunity to look around the Library of Birmingham and ask any questions. We look forward to receiving your completed application form.
